Three alternative treatment options for spinal stenosis in the back

Spinal stenosis treatment often involves multiple options, ranging from over-the-counter medications to physical therapy and everything in between. For some people, alternative therapies offer additional options that — while not yet widely accepted as a form of traditional medicine — have the potential to reduce inflammation, relieve pain and make it easier to work and go about daily life. Three such options are acupuncture, TENS therapy and natural reservatrol supplements.

A cornerstone of several ancient medicinal systems, acupuncture uses small needles to stimulate specific trigger points throughout the body and promote the release of endorphins, or natural pain-relieving hormones. Acupuncture is also used to promote better circulation and balance the flow of energy throughout the body.

TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) therapy

This therapy uses mild electrical currents to stimulate nerves and block pain signals from traveling to the brain. It involves the use of a small machine (a physical therapist, acupuncturist or physician can program the machine and administer the treatment in-office, or the machine can be used at home). TENS is not addictive or associated with any major side effects, making it ideal for spinal stenosis treatment.

Resveratrol supplements

Resveratrol is a substance that occurs naturally in pistachios, red grapes, blueberries, cranberries and other plants. Its role in nature is to protect plants from ultraviolet (UV) rays. When taken as a supplement, it has the potential to provide anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits. Some small studies have even found it to be effective for treating osteoarthritis, but additional research is still being performed to determine the most appropriate ways to use it. Individuals who are interested in incorporating resveratrol supplements into their spinal stenosis treatment plan are encouraged to work directly with their physician.
