Recovery Time After Surgery

Recovery time after surgery is often one of the most critical components when deciding whether to have an elective procedure performed, and is one of the first questions a prospective patient might ask. After any surgery, the body will need a period of time return to normal and to restore any tissue that might have been damaged as part of the operation. Whether in the hospital, at home, or both, the recovery period is necessary to rebuild strength and allow the healing process to take place.

Spine Surgery

As it relates to spine surgery, the amount of recovery needed depends on the specific type of procedure that is being performed. In the past, spine surgeries were performed strictly as open procedures. Now, many common surgeries can be performed with minimally invasive technology. Naturally, this can have an effect on recovery times. Traditional spine surgeries often require large incisions and the cutting of muscle in order to approach the affected area of the spine. This damage to soft tissue usually requires a lengthy recovery period.

In contrast, a minimally invasive spine procedure performed using endoscopic technology requires a much shorter recuperation period. The use of an endoscope (a small tube through which a camera and surgical instruments are inserted) means the surgeon only needs to create a tiny incision, typically around an inch in length. Furthermore, muscle and other soft tissue can be pushed aside gently, rather than dissected, which also greatly reduces trauma and associated recovery time. Scarring is also minimal with endoscopic procedures, which can often be performed on an outpatient basis with no hospital stay necessary.
