outpatient
« back to GlossaryOutpatient
The term "outpatient" means a patient who does not stay in the hospital for 24 hours or longer, but visits a hospital or other medical facility for diagnosis and/or treatment of their health issues. This term is often used in relation to surgery, and means that a procedure does not require the patient to stay overnight in the hospital.
Outpatient Spine Surgery
While traditional spine surgeries were massively invasive, requiring hospitalization, large incisions, and lengthy recovery times, endoscopic techniques can be used to perform a spinal procedure on an outpatient basis. This means that a patient can come in for an endoscopic procedure and leave the medical facility on the same day. In addition, there are a number of other benefits of a minimally invasive procedure versus an open spine surgery, such as:
- Smaller incision
- Less risk of infection
- No cutting of muscle
- No insertion of hardware or bone grafts
- Significantly shorter recovery time
