neck surgery
« back to GlossaryNeck Surgery
Neck surgery, quite simply, describes any surgical procedure that is performed on the neck area of the body. This can be done for any number of reasons, but when a neck operation is performed to relieve the pain and other symptoms resulting from a degenerative spine condition, there are two key distinctions to make.
Types of Spinal Neck Surgery
Spinal neck procedures can be performed using traditional, open spine techniques, or minimally invasive endoscopic procedures. Here is a brief overview of these two types of procedures:
- Open spine surgery – Often performed as a spinal fusion surgery, this type of operation typically requires large incisions, the insertion of hardware and/or bone grafts, a hospital stay, and a lengthy recovery period. There is also a risk of infection, as well as the body rejecting the implants, which can result in a failed fusion and further problems.
- Minimally invasive procedures – Using endoscopic technology, surgeons can perform neck surgery on an outpatient basis, with a much smaller incision, fewer risks, and a much shorter recuperation.
