Naproxen

Naproxen is a common non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), available in both prescription and over-the-counter forms. The drug was only accessible in the United States with a doctor’s prescription until the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved it for over-the-counter use in 1994; it remains a prescription-only medication in many parts of the world. Naproxen is used to treat mild to moderate pain, fever, stiffness, and inflammation caused by conditions such as menstrual cramps, tendinitis, colds, muscles aches, several forms of arthritis, and more.

Side Effects

It is important to consult with your doctor before taking any form of naproxen. Although the drug is typically considered a safe pain reliever for most people, certain side effects can develop in some cases, including:

  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Headache
  • Constipation
  • Upset stomach
  • Heartburn

Additionally, there may be a higher chance for developing cardiovascular problems, including stroke and heart attack, with the prolonged use of naproxen.

Laser Spine Institute

Your doctor may recommend naproxen as a first step in treating back and neck pain, as it is often an effective conservative (non-invasive) treatment. However, if conservative treatments fail to provide symptomatic relief from spinal conditions, surgery may be recommended. Laser Spine Institute offers a number of minimally invasive procedures that are a safe and effective alternative to open back and neck surgery. Our orthopedic experts perform these outpatient procedures with innovative endoscopic techniques, which allow most patients to get back on their feet within an hour of surgery. To schedule a complimentary review of your MRI or CT scan, contact Laser Spine Institute.
