IDET (intradiscal electrothermal therapy)
« back to GlossaryIDET (Intradiscal Electrothermal Therapy)
The development of electrothermal catheters for careful control of temperature allowed for the introduction of intradiscal electrothermal therapy (IDET), which involves the insertion of a probe to heat and cauterize damaged intervertebral disc tissue.
Who IDET Is For
This minimally invasive procedure is used to treat the symptoms associated with a herniated disc in the lumbar (lower back) region of the spine. Most of the time, symptoms such as pain, tingling, numbness, or muscle weakness can be managed using pain medication, exercise, stretching, physical therapy, or other conservative treatments. IDET might be indicated for patients who continue to experience chronic pain after several weeks or months of non-invasive treatment. People with small herniations, internal disc tears, or mild disc degeneration in one or two vertebral segments might be candidates for IDET.
