Degenerative Spine Definition

There are two painful conditions that can contribute to a degenerative spine and, once you learn the definition of each condition, you’ll discover that both are characterized by the deterioration of cartilaginous areas of the back. Degenerative disc disease and facet disease affect the intervertebral discs and the facet joints, respectively. Both parts of the spine rely on cartilaginous connective tissue for ease of mobility, shock absorption, flexibility, and ligamental purposes. As we grow older, however, this cartilage naturally begins to break down and wear away, which contributes to an overall weakening of the spine that can give rise to other painful conditions.

Types of Degenerative Spine Disorders

  • Degenerative disc disease — between each vertebra is an intervertebral disc. Due to age or injury, the outer wall of a disc which can weaken and tear (herniated disc) or protrude (bulging disc), thereby exerting painful pressure on spinal nerves.
  • Facet disease — the joints that act as hinges for adjacent vertebrae are cushioned by cartilage and lubricated by synovial fluid. As the cartilage wears away, the body produces bone spurs, or osteophytes, to try and reinforce the spine, but these bone spurs can exert painful pressure on spinal nerves.

Treatment for a Degenerative Spine

The best initial approach to any degenerative spine condition is a conservative treatment plan that may include anything from gentle yoga to steroid injections, pain medication to deep breathing exercises. The important thing is to attempt non-invasive alternatives first, and the majority of back or neck pain sufferers will be able to manage their symptoms without having to visit a spine surgery center.
