chronic pain
« back to GlossaryChronic Pain
Chronic pain is defined as pain that persists for more than 3 months. Specifically in regards to the spine, this type of pain can occur in the neck and back, as well as radiate along nerves down throughout the extremities.
Causes of Chronic Pain
This type of pain can be caused by a wide variety of degenerative spine conditions. These can include:
- Bulging disc or herniated disc
- Pinched nerve
- Bone spurs
- Facet disease
- Spinal arthritis
- Spinal stenosis
- And others
Interestingly, these conditions do not actually cause the pain themselves. The true culprit is nerve compression. For instance, when a bulging disc places pressure on a nearby spinal nerve, or the spinal cord itself, chronic pain and other debilitating symptoms can result.
Treatment Options
Chronic pain can be intensely debilitating and extremely disruptive. It can quickly make leading a normal, active lifestyle impossible. The good news is that a treatment program consisting of conservative, nonsurgical options can be very effective in managing pain. Always consult with your doctor when considering possible treatment options, but most patients find themselves trying a variety of treatments, such as:
- Prescription or over-the-counter pain medications
- Hot/cold therapy
- Physical therapy
- TENS
- Exercise
- Massage
- Chiropractic treatment
- And others
Again, be sure to speak with your doctor in order to get an expert's recommendation as far as treatment options are concerned.
