  • electromyography (EMG):

a test that uses the electrical signals of muscles to help detect potential nerve abnormalities. It can be useful in the detection of several spinal disorders, including spinal stenosis, herniated discs, bulging discs, and sciatic nerve compression. Often used in conjunction with a nerve conduction study (NCS).

  • endoscopic discectomy:

a minimally invasive procedure used to treat nerve compression by removing only the portion of intervertebral disc material responsible for producing symptoms such as pain, tingling, numbness, or muscle weakness. Used to treat degenerative disc disease, sciatica, and other spinal conditions, this procedure stands in contrast to a traditional discectomy, in which the lamina and the entire disc nucleus are removed. At Laser Spine Institute, the procedure is known as percutaneous endoscopic discectomy.

  • Epidural steroid injection (ESI):

a minimally invasive procedure designed to alleviate chronic back or neck pain by reducing swelling at the site of spinal nerve compression. This is accomplished by injecting an anti-inflammatory agent (corticosteroid) into the adjacent epidural space, which is the area between the protective covering of the spinal cord and the vertebrae.

  • endoscopic:

Endoscopic is a term used to describe surgical procedures in which the surgeon utilizes an endoscope (a long, thin tube with a camera and light attached at the end).

  • endoscopic spine surgery:

a minimally invasive procedure that addresses spinal abnormalities causing painful nerve compression. A series of flexible tubes and a video monitor allow the surgeon to access the affected portion of your spine without a large incision or trauma to connective tissues.

  • endoscope:

A surgical or diagnostic tool that is used to view interior body cavities, including the gastrointestinal tract and spine.
