Non-Invasive Osteophytes Treatment

If you are suffering from back or neck pain as a result of osteophytes in the spinal column, you have various treatment options to consider. In most cases, you can manage the pain resulting from these smooth growths of bone with conservative treatment over several weeks, although for some, further treatment may be necessary.

Non-Invasive Treatment

The growth of osteophytes typically accompanies the gradual degeneration of the intervertbebral discs and vertebral joints in the spine or in the aftermath of an injury. Formed as a response to damaged bone, these bone growths normally compensate for damaged bone. However, in the event that a bone spur comes into contact with a nerve or another bone, treatment may be required. In most cases, your physician will first attempt to treat osteophytes with a combination of conservative, non-surgical treatments, such as:

• Medication – over-the-counter or prescription pain medication, anti-inflammatories or muscle relaxants
• Exercise and stretching – targeted exercises and thorough stretching can strengthen the back and neck and help prevent further injury
• Posture correction – ensuring correct spine alignment can alleviate stress on the back and neck and limit pain from an osteophyte
• Diet – careful diet can help further reduce stress on the spine
• Acupuncture or chiropractics – can relax the spine
• Rest – while becoming sedentary can make pain worse, limited rest can be helpful

Other Options
