Osteophyte

Osteophyte

Osteophyte is the medical term for the condition commonly referred to as a "bone spur." An osteophyte is extra bone growth that your body initiates in response to joint problems such as arthritis, disc degeneration, aging, poor posture, or other causes. Bone spurs on their own do not cause problems, but they can impinge on nerves or other bones and cause intense pain and debilitation. This can be especially troublesome when osteophytes develop along the spinal column, as they can lead to nerve impingement that results in severe back and/or neck pain, restricted movement, radiating arm and leg pain, weakness in the extremities, numbness, and in some cases disability. An X-ray can determine the presence of osteophytes, and there are a number of potential treatment options, including medications, physical therapy, and even invasive open-back surgery.
