Orthopedic Institute

A reputable orthopedic institute should offer outstanding medical care, while still being an environment that is comfortable and calming to you. Most people choose a clinic based on how well its doctors can heal their back and neck pain, so the healing process should be all-encompassing—from the moment they go in for your initial evaluation to the post-surgery rehabilitation process.
The Medical Review
One way to feel at ease at your orthopedic institute is to know what you can expect on your initial visit. Specialists in the orthopedic group practice will thoroughly review your medical history and do the following:
- Symptoms Inquiry—your orthopedic doctor will ask you about the nature of your spine pain, its location, severity, and frequency. An orthopedic institute may also administer the Oswestry Questionnaire, which is a way to gauge how much or how little your back pain affects your daily quality of life.
- Physical Exam—the physical exam may have several components, including tests for reflexes, flexibility, and joint mobility. An orthopedic physician may also palpate certain areas of the spine to check for pain or inflammation. If you’ve reported feeling lower back disc pain, your doctor may do a test that involves raising your leg off the ground to check for sciatic nerve compression.
- MRI or CT scan—medical imaging tests allow the specialists at your orthopedic institute to pinpoint the exact location of damage and to check for conditions like spinal narrowing (spinal stenosis), bone cysts, bone spurs, deformity, herniated discs, bulging discs, etc.
- Additional Tests—the doctors at your orthopedic clinic may also do blood work and diagnostic injections.
