Orthopedic Clinics

Orthopedic clinics are only as good as the surgeons on staff, which is why it’s important to research the qualifications and background of the medical personnel before choosing which clinic to visit. If you are considering surgery for chronic back or neck pain, a good place to begin your research is with your primary care physician. He or she can make a recommendation, at which the decision is yours and yours alone – never let yourself be pressured into choosing a particular surgeon or clinic.

In addition to your personal doctor, your friends and family are good sources of information as you consider your options. Are there particular orthopedic clinics where they might have had positive experiences? What were the drawbacks, if any? Would they choose to visit the same orthopedic clinic again if necessary? These are important questions to ask, but there are other factors to consider, as well.

What to Look for from Your Orthopedic Surgeon

Before agreeing to undergo a back or neck procedure, look into the surgeon’s qualifications. Here is a preliminary checklist to follow:

  • Experience – typically, the longer someone has engaged in a profession, the more competent they are
  • Training – ongoing education is important in the medical field, where practitioners must remain updated on the latest advances in technology
  • Membership in professional associations – this demonstrates the practitioner’s involvement with and standing in his or her chosen field
  • Board certifications – an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in the back and neck should have completed, at the minimum, a one-year fellowship in spine surgery in addition to four years of surgical residency at a renowned hospital
