Orthopedics

Orthopedics is a branch of medicine concerned with the function and integrity of the musculo-skeletal system. Its practitioners seek to identify, prevent, and/or correct disorders, injuries, and deformities of the muscles, ligaments/tendons, and skeleton. Thus, it is in the field of orthopedics back ailments are diagnosed and treated.
Spinal Anatomy
The core of the body’s musculoskeletal system is the spine, as it serves as the chief means of communication between the brain and the various organs and systems located throughout the body. As the body ages, it degenerates, and this is certainly true in the spine, where the intervertebral discs gradually lose their shape and strength or where debris can build up in the canals carrying nerve roots. So, it stands to reason that as one ages, one is more likely to develop orthopedic ailments such as foraminal stenosis, herniated discs, spinal arthritis, and many others for which typical conservative treatments (rest, ice or heat, anti-inflammatory drugs) do not always offer sufficient pain relief. This is where orthopedists or orthopedic surgeons come in.
