Stop Neck Pain

When you need to stop neck pain, you need information. Knowing the cause of your neck pain is the first step to stopping it, and the only way to know for sure what’s making your neck hurt is to go see your doctor. It might be comforting to know that most neck pain is associated with nothing more serious than a muscle strain or ligament sprain and will fade on its own, but only an accurate diagnosis can tell you exactly what’s wrong.

Once a diagnosis has been made – perhaps you have a bulging cervical disc, a herniated disc, bones spurs, or spinal stenosis – chances are your doctor will initially prescribe a course of conservative treatment. The goal will be relief from neck pain and the eradication of symptoms, which can include chronic localized pain or pain that radiates through the shoulders, arms, and hands. Symptoms aren’t limited to pain, either. Tingling, numbness, or muscle weakness can strike the shoulders, arms, hands, or fingers if a cervical nerve root is compressed.

Among the conservative options for treatments a doctor might employ in an attempt to stop neck pain is physical therapy, exercise, rest, behavior modification, prescription or over-the-counter pain medicine, or even cortisone injections that will relieve inflammation. If chronic neck pain relief still cannot be achieved even after weeks or months of conservative treatment, a doctor might suggest surgery as an option.
