Stiff Neck Relief

Stiff Neck Relief

Stiff neck relief generally can be accomplished through the use of over-the-counter analgesics or anti-inflammatory medicine. In most cases, a stiff neck is the result of a muscle strain, which can be caused by repetitive adverse behavior, such as prolonged poor posture while sitting at your desk at work or sleeping with your head in an awkward position. A stiff neck might also be the result of a ligament sprain, which can be caused by a violent collision during a car accident or while playing sports.

There are other conditions that create the need for stiff neck relief, and many of those conditions involve the cervical spine – the seven vertebrae at the top of the backbone. When conditions such as bulging disc, herniated disc, spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease or bone spurs cause the compression or irritation of a cervical nerve root, pain, tingling, numbness or muscle weakness can strike the neck, shoulders, arms and hands. Sometimes the pain associated with a pinched nerve makes it difficult to turn the head – a stiff neck is the result.

Most of the time, these symptoms will fade and sore neck relief can be achieved in due course, especially in conjunction with a program of conservative treatment prescribed by your doctor. Stiff neck relief in the presence of a compressed nerve root can be accomplished through physical therapy, exercise, rest, pain medicine or behavior modification. If you still cannot achieve chronic neck pain relief even after weeks or months of conservative treatment, a doctor might suggest surgery as an option.

There is an alternative to traditional procedures like vertebral fusion or disc replacement, operations that involve the removal of a large portion of the spinal anatomy and the implantation of metal rods or bone grafts. The surgeons at Laser Spine Institute (LSI) use gentle, endoscopic techniques to perform minimally invasive, outpatient procedures to help you rediscover a life without pain. Contact LSI to learn more, or for a free review of your MRI or CT scan.

Please note: Laser Spine Institute currently does not perform endoscopic procedures on the thoracic spine.
