Relief for Pinched Nerve in the Neck

Relief for Pinched Nerve in Neck

The method of relief for a pinched nerve in the neck will depend on its cause. In many cases, a nerve root in the cervical spine is compressed, or “pinched,” because of a muscle strain or spasm that might have developed as you slept with your head in an awkward position. Generally, the symptoms produced by this kind of pinched nerve will fade over time, but there are steps you can take to prevent the condition from limiting your ability to function.

If you wake up with what you believe might be a pinched nerve in your neck, the following actions may help you find sore neck relief:

  • Perform neck rolls to help with range of motion
  • Alternate between heating pads and ice packs
  • Take a hot shower
  • Lie down with a rolled towel supporting the neck
  • Take an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medicine

If the pain persists after a few days, visit your doctor to determine whether the pinched nerve is caused by something other than a muscle spasm or strain. Other causes of a pinched nerve include: herniated disc, bulging disc, spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, bone spurs and osteoarthritis. The symptoms associated with these conditions generally can be managed through conservative treatment that includes physical therapy, rest, exercise, pain medication and therapeutic massage.

Sometimes, relief for a pinched nerve in the neck can only be achieved through surgery. Traditional neck surgery often involves the removal of a large portion of the spinal anatomy, along with vertebral fusion or disc replacement, and these procedures require a long hospital stay and lengthy recuperation.

Many patients have found an alternative to traditional neck surgery at Laser Spine Institute (LSI), where our surgeons perform minimally invasive, outpatient procedures using gentle, endoscopic techniques. We’ve already helped tens of thousands of people find relief from neck pain—let us do the same for you. Contact LSI to learn more, or for a free review of your MRI or CT scan.

Please note: Laser Spine Institute currently does not perform endoscopic procedures on the thoracic spine.
