- Relief for Neck Pain
Relief for Neck Pain

Relief for neck pain takes many forms, and the technique used to manage the pain depends on the cause. Most neck pain can be handled using over-the-counter analgesics or anti-inflammatory medicine, which are effective for treating muscle strains or ligament sprains. Most strains and sprains heal on their own and have only short-term effects on quality of life.
However, the symptoms produced by some cervical spine conditions, such as a herniated disc, often require more effort to find relief for neck pain. These symptoms are produced by the compression or irritation of an adjacent nerve root or the spinal cord itself. When nerve compression occurs within the cervical spine, the neck, shoulders, arms, hands, and fingers can be subjected to the following symptoms:
- Pain in the location of the nerve compression
- Pain that radiates down the shoulders and into the arms
- Tingling
- Numbness, or loss of sensation
- Muscle weakness

More often than not, the symptoms produced by a compressed nerve root within the cervical spine can be managed through a course of conservative treatment including exercise, physical therapy, pain medicine, rest or behavior modification.
Long-term relief for neck pain may not be possible through conservative treatment, in which case a doctor might suggest surgery as an option. Traditional neck surgery generally is associated with a long hospital stay and a lengthy recuperation. It also can involve major procedures such as vertebral fusion and disc replacement, usually accompanied by a bone graft, none of which guarantee upper back and neck pain relief.
Laser Spine Institute (LSI) offers a gentle, endoscopic alternative. The surgeons at LSI perform minimally invasive, outpatient procedures to help patients achieve lasting relief from neck pain. Contact LSI for more information, or for a free review of your CT scan or MRI.
Please note: Laser Spine Institute currently does not perform endoscopic procedures on the thoracic spine.
