Alternative Neck Treatments

Alternative neck treatments generally come into play once traditional forms of conservative treatment – such as physical therapy, exercise, rest or behavior modification – have failed to mitigate the symptoms of cervical spinal conditions such as bulging disc, herniated disc, cervical stenosis, degenerative disc disease or osteoarthritis. Rather than jump immediately into surgery, a patient might turn to other methods in order to manage chronic pain, tingling, numbness, or muscle weakness in the neck, shoulders, arms, and hands.
When considering alternative neck treatments, it’s important to consult with your physician to make sure there’s no danger of exacerbating your symptoms. Many family doctors have strong opinions about less-traditional methods of health care, and for good reason – some practitioners of alternative neck treatments fall outside the jurisdiction of the Food and Drug Administration and other regulatory agencies, and the methods might not be supported by scientific research.
However, there are still plenty of patients who have achieved relief from neck pain with alternative pain management techniques such as exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF), homeopathic medicine, therapeutic touch and a number of traditional Asian remedies based on diet and the channeling of the body’s “spiritual energy.”
The following are broadly accepted complementary and alternative medical practices used to find chronic neck pain relief:
- Chiropractic therapy
- Acupuncture
- Therapeutic massage
- Osteopathy
- Yoga

If chronic neck pain persists even after weeks or months of conservative treatment – alternative or otherwise – a doctor might suggest surgery as option. Laser Spine Institute (LSI) offers an alternative to traditional neck surgeries. Using gentle, endoscopic techniques to perform minimally invasive, outpatient procedures, the surgeons at LSI can help you avoid the long hospital stay and lengthy recuperation associated with open back surgery. Contact LSI to learn more, or for a free review of your MRI or CT scan.
Please note: Laser Spine Institute currently does not perform endoscopic procedures on the thoracic spine.
