HNP at the L5 Level

Herniated nucleus pulposus (HNP) at the fifth vertebral level of the lumbar spine (L5) can commonly cause lower back pain and sciatica. This type of degenerative spine condition is occasionally caused by a traumatic event or other type of injury, but more often than not regular wear and tear is to blame. Symptoms of HNP at the L5 level vary depending on the specific location and severity of the accompanying nerve compression, but this condition can often lead to the compression of the sciatic nerve and the condition known colloquially as sciatica.

Symptoms

HNP at the L5 isn’t necessarily symptomatic, but when the disc material comes into contact with the sciatic nerve, spinal cord, or another nearby nerve, a number of symptoms can present. Some of the most common symptoms of HNP at the L5 level include:

  • Chronic lower back pain
  • Pain that radiates along the sciatic nerve into one or both of the legs (sciatic pain)
  • Muscle weakness in the thighs, knees or shins
  • Numbness or tingling in the feet or toes
  • A feeling of pins and needles

Treatment

As anyone who suffers from sciatica knows, HNP at L5 can have a real effect on an individual’s quality of life. The good news is that there are a number of nerve decompression treatments available to alleviate pressure off of the sciatic nerve. In all but the most extreme cases, doctors will first attempt to treat an individual’s pain with a steady course of conservative, noninvasive treatments. These treatments vary from patient to patient but most often include some combination of low-impact exercise, pain medication, heat or ice packs, and rest.

For patients who continue to experience chronic sciatic pain, surgery might be suggested. If this is your situation, first contact Laser Spine Institute to learn about our minimally invasive, outpatient endoscopic procedures as an alternative to open spine surgery. One of our safe and effective treatments might be just the thing you need to overcome your HNP at L5 and help you rediscover your life without back or neck pain.

Please note: Laser Spine Institute currently does not perform endoscopic procedures on the thoracic spine.
