Bulging Disc Treatments

Bulging Disc Treatments

Bulging disc treatments come in a variety of forms. The treatment your doctor recommends for you would depend on several factors such as the location of your bulging disc, the severity of your symptoms, and how long you’ve been experiencing them. Often, bulging disc treatments start off conservative because most bulging disc cases are mild and patients start to feel better after a few weeks. As time goes on, however, doctors may recommend stronger or more invasive treatments to address symptoms that are having an impact on your quality of life.

Bulging disc treatments include:

  • 1-2 days of bed rest
  • Restriction from heavy lifting and other activities that would cause strain on the back
  • Heat application through a heating pad or hot showers
  • Ice pack application
  • Exercises as recommended by a physical therapist
  • Pain medications (over the counter and/or prescription)
  • Anti-inflammatory medications
  • Epidural steroid (cortisone) injections
  • More

There also are alternative therapies for bulging discs, such as:

Like many people, you may have tried all of the above bulging disc treatments, and yet you are still suffering with life-altering symptoms like severe pain, weakness, numbness, and tingling that radiates from the location of your damaged disc to your limbs. In about 10% of bulging disc cases, surgery is necessary to provide patients with meaningful relief from their disabling pain and loss of function. Your doctor may have already told you about traditional disc surgery that involves a hospital stay, invasive techniques, and sometimes the use of metal screws or plates, spinal fusion, and artificial disc replacement.

The surgeons at Laser Spine Institute have pioneered several endoscopic techniques that have been tremendously successful in treating bulging discs and many other back problems. Our bulging disc surgery can be performed on an outpatient basis. Our patients walk away from the operating table and often begin to experience relief immediately. For more information on LSI and our revolutionary procedures, please contact us today for a free MRI or CT scan review.

Please note: Laser Spine Institute currently does not perform endoscopic procedures on the thoracic spine.
