Percutaneous Endoscopic Discectomy

Percutaneous Endoscopic Discectomy

Percutaneous endoscopic discectomy is a procedure used at Laser Spine Institute (LSI) to treat bulging and slightly herniated discs in the neck or back. A bulging or herniated disc can occur as a result of a number of conditions, from injury to aging to poor body mechanics. Depending on where the affected disc is located in the spine, symptoms can be felt in either the neck, mid back, low back, buttocks, or limbs. The symptoms range from mild to severe, and can include pain, numbness, tingling, and muscle weakness.

Bulging disc or herniated disc symptoms are caused when the bloated or expelled disc material places pressure on surrounding nerves in the spinal column; so, the aim of discectomy is to decompress the nerves by removing the displaced disc material. But it’s important to understand that unlike traditional discectomy and some forms of microdiscectomy, percutaneous endoscopic discectomy at LSI does not involve removal of bone, the entire disc, or large amounts of tissue, and therefore will never necessitate a spinal fusion to stabilize the spine.

Percutaneous endoscopic discectomy at Laser Spine Institute is a minimally invasive, endoscopic procedure that is performed in an outpatient setting under local anesthesia and deep IV sedation. During the procedure, a surgeon inserts a series of tubes in graduating diameter to gently spread apart the skin and muscle tissues, thereby allowing access to the affected disc. The surgical site is viewed under high-power magnification and the damaged disc material is removed using tiny surgical instruments, a suction device, and lasers.

Most bulging or herniated disc symptoms can be relieved during a three-to-six-month course of conservative therapy, so a discectomy is only recommended in a small percentage of cases. If you try conservative treatments but still experience painful and debilitating symptoms, contact LSI for a free MRI or CT scan review. Our laser-assisted percutaneous endoscopic discectomy has successfully treated thousands of patients all over the world suffering from painful herniated and bulging discs. So, take the first step to get your life back by contacting us today.

Please note: Laser Spine Institute currently does not perform endoscopic procedures on the thoracic spine.
