Minimally Invasive Cervical Spine Surgery

Minimally Invasive Cervical Spine Surgery

Minimally invasive cervical spine surgery is a procedure that treats spinal conditions in the upper back and neck. Because the cervical region of the spine – the C1 – C7 vertebrae – must support the head and facilitate movements between the head and body, everyday activities like laughing, reading, driving, or simply nodding, can become extremely painful if a cervical vertebrae or disc is damaged.

Minimally invasive cervical surgery is conducted done through a small, percutaneous incision that does not cut, strip, or damage surrounding soft tissues. A very small tube is inserted through the incision and muscles are gently moved aside during the procedure. Through the tube instruments are used to remove damaged disc material or other tissue that is causing painful neural pressure.

Conditions that may prompt you to consider a minimally invasive surgery include:

  • Herniated disc: the rupture of an intervertebral disc that causes inner disc material to extrude into the spinal canal, sometimes pressing on nerve tissue.
  • Bulging disc: a portion of an intervertebral disc presses into the spinal canal sometimes causing nerve compression.
  • Osteoarthritis: a degenerative condition of the vertebrae that results in bone-on-bone rubbing and irritation. It can also cause osteophytes to form and impinge on the foramen.
  • Bone spurs: also called osteophytes, these abnormal bone growths can cause the spinal canal to narrow.
  • Cervical foraminal stenosis: the narrowing of the spinal canal in the upper back or neck region of the spine. When the foramina are narrowed the nerves can be compressed.

Non-invasive, conventional pain relief treatments may give you some comfort. Physical therapy, mild stretching, rest, anti-inflammatory medication, or steroid injections should be tried before you make the decision to undergo minimally invasive cervical spine surgery. The surgeons at Laser Spine Institute (LSI) are ready to talk when you are. Our revolutionary endoscopic procedures are minimally invasive and have helped thousands of people find relief from back and neck pain. Contact us today for a free review of your MRI or CT scan.

Please note: Laser Spine Institute currently does not perform endoscopic procedures on the thoracic spine.
