Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery

Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery

Minimal invasive spine surgery is a type of procedure used to treat conditions in the cervical, thoracic, or lumbar regions of the spine without making large incisions. This is achieved with endoscopy – the use of a thin tube to access the site. Tools, including a light, video camera, and laser, are fed through the tube to treat the affected area of the spine.

In addition to minimally invasive surgery, invasive surgery and noninvasive methods can be used to treat back and neck conditions. Invasive surgeries are also known as "open surgeries" and often require general anesthesia, large incisions, and hospitalization. They can also result in extensive recovery time as well as increased risk of infection and scarring. A minimal invasive spine surgery, however, is often done with local anesthesia and deep IV sedation, and utilizes a very small incision, so risk of infection, scarring, and other complications?are greatly reduced.

The following are some characteristics of minimal invasive spine surgery:

  • Percutaneous incision: small instruments are inserted through a 5mm.-incision in the skin
  • Muscle preservation: endoscopy enables surgery to be performed without trauma to the muscles, like cutting or tearing
  • Gentler anesthesia: localized numbing and IV sedation, not general anesthesia
  • Decreased recovery time: smaller incisions and decreased muscle/ligament trauma allows you to return to full activity quickly

Conditions of the spine that may prompt you to consider minimal invasive spine surgery include degenerative disc disease, bone spurs, herniated disc, bulging disc, ligament hypertrophy, and spinal foraminal stenosis, all of which cause nerve root compression. Surgery is aimed at relieving stress on the nerves.

If you suffer from any of the above conditions and are considering minimally invasive cervical spine surgery, thoracic spine surgery, or lumbar spine surgery, Laser Spine Institute (LSI) is ready to talk to you about our state-of-the-art endoscopic procedures that have helped thousands of people rediscover a life without pain. For more information or for a free review of your MRI or CT scan, contact us today. Remember, the pain of a spine condition does not have to be a fixture in your life.
